Independent UX design for complex software.

I work directly with founders and product teams on B2B software. My background is in aviation and healthcare, where the design has to account for how people do their jobs.

Previously in-house at United Airlines and IMO Health. Independent work in radiology, fintech and defense analytics.

People. Workflows. Interfaces.

Selected work

I share the full case studies once we're talking. Book 15 minutes and I'll walk you through them.

Automated decisions

A lot of my recent work sits between an algorithm and the people responsible for it.

In i-medical a rules engine assigns radiology exams, and coordinators needed to see why a scan went to a specific radiologist. In Neura the forecast had to say how sure it was before a founder acted on it. I design how automated decisions show their reasoning and how people step in when they disagree.

Client feedback

Clients value how I work with their teams.

“He adapted to our schedule without missing a beat and communicated clearly throughout. We'll absolutely be working with him again.”

Upwork client, SaaS web application

“Bryan's communication has been exceptional. He was clear, proactive, and thoughtful in how he explained design decisions, asked the right questions, and iterated quickly based on feedback.”

What I do

I work on new products and existing platforms.

Product design

I design workflows for people managing dense information and complex rules. That includes radiology assignment, financial dashboards and emergency response. Explore the radiology work.

Design systems

I build component libraries and document how to use them. At IMO Health, I worked on a company-wide system for clinical products. At United, I audited a vendor build against the existing system. Read the Safety Hub case study.

User research

I interview the people doing the work and test designs with them. At United, I visited maintenance hubs to understand how planners and supervisors handled changes on the hangar floor. Read the field research.

Bryan Engle

About

I'm Bryan. You work directly with me.

I run Gridline as an independent UX practice in Utrecht. I handle the research, design and conversations with your team.

Before freelancing full-time, I worked on enterprise tools at United Airlines. I bring that experience to independent projects for founders and product teams across Europe and North America.

I also build prototypes in code from written specs. I use Claude and GPT to help with implementation, then review the screens and interactions myself.

Defined scope

Design project

I work through a new product or a specific workflow with your team. We agree on the scope, deliverables and fee before the project starts.

Ongoing collaboration

Embedded partner

I join your team's planning and work alongside your engineers as the product develops. We set the scope and working rhythm together.

Discuss ongoing support

Before you commission design work

I help you define the next step.

If your product is difficult to use, the next step depends on what your team already knows. I explain when I would start with an audit, user research or a design project.

Questions

What working together looks like.

How do you work with a remote team?

I work with teams across Europe and North America. We agree on the meeting schedule and feedback process at the start, with design files and documentation in your workspace.

Can you work under NDA?

Yes. My background includes aviation and healthcare, where NDAs and security reviews are part of the work. The United case studies have public summaries, with detailed material available on request.

How do you hand off to engineers?

I organize the Figma files, document interaction states and work through edge cases with your engineers. We agree on support during implementation as part of the engagement.

What if I'm not sure what kind of help I need?

Tell me what you're building and where you're getting stuck. I can take a look and suggest a starting point.
